Across Etwatwa and Daveyton, organisations feed families, sort out papers and grants, and train people for work. They've been here for years. The problem was never that they don't exist — it's that no one could find them.
NPO Hub began with an email that keeps arriving. At Astute Tech Foundation, we receive them most weeks — a young person asking for a bursary or a donated laptop. And almost every one carries the same quiet second paragraph: "I'm the one looking after my grandmother — she's sick. If I can get a laptop I can do a short course, and maybe find work, so I can look after her properly."
These aren't children asking to be rescued. They're young people already carrying a whole household, asking for one tool so they can carry it better. And most of them are surrounded — within walking distance — by organisations that could help: a feeding scheme, someone who knows the grant process, a place that does skills training. The help is right there. It's just invisible online.
One device becomes a course. A course becomes work. Work carries the whole house. The young people writing to us already know the chain — they just can't reach the first link.
NPO Hub closes that gap. It puts the organisations of Etwatwa and Daveyton on a map families can search, gives those organisations a place to say what they need, and gives donors and volunteers a way to reach them directly. The letters are the fuller case for it, in people's own words.

It would be easy to promise more than we can safely deliver. We've chosen not to. Phase 1 — the directory, the needs and offers boards, and verified step-by-step pathways — is what's being built now, and it's deliberately simple. Phase 2 — consented referral and case tracking with registered social workers — is designed and costed, and will not be switched on until it can be done safely and lawfully, especially where children are involved.
We'd rather ship something honest and small than something impressive and unsafe. The roadmap lays out exactly where that line sits, and why.
NPO Hub is a programme of Astute Tech Foundation, a registered South African non-profit rooted in Etwatwa on the East Rand. The Foundation grew out of years of community technology work in the same streets it now serves — a belief that the tools to change a neighbourhood's prospects should live inside that neighbourhood, not somewhere far away.
